On June 9, 2025, a serious fire erupted aboard the Singapore-flagged containership Wan Hai 503 approximately 78 nautical miles southwest of India’s Kerala region. The vessel, en route from Colombo to Mumbai, is now abandoned as the fire continues to spread rapidly, posing significant risks to crew safety and maritime security in the region.
Indian Coast Guard and Navy Respond to Wan Hai 503 Fire
The Indian Coast Guard and Navy swiftly responded after receiving the initial fire report at 12:30 local time. The fire began in a single container but quickly spread to surrounding units, with reports indicating at least 40 to 50 containers lost overboard amid the flames and several containers visibly damaged or overturned. Media images show dense smoke and burning containers on the forward part of the ship.
Multiple explosions reportedly occurred aboard the Wan Hai 503, which was transporting hazardous materials, including flammable liquids and solids, spontaneous combustible substances, and toxic cargo. The presence of these dangerous goods complicates firefighting efforts and raises concerns about secondary explosions and environmental hazards.
Crew Rescue and Ongoing Search Operations
Of the crew aboard, 18 were rescued from lifeboats and life rafts and are currently en route to New Mangalore Port aboard an Indian Navy vessel. Two survivors sustained serious injuries, while three others have less severe wounds. Unfortunately, four crew members remain missing, including nationals from Taiwan, Indonesia, and Myanmar. Search operations continue with Indian Coast Guard ships and aircraft participating in the effort.
The Wan Hai 503 departed Colombo on June 7 and was scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on June 10. At 51,300 deadweight tons (DWT) and a capacity of 4,252 TEU, the 882-foot (229-meter) vessel was built in 2005 and had undergone a recent Port State inspection in Mumbai earlier in June. Minor issues were noted related to loading equipment and workspace safety, but the ship was not detained.
Salvage and firefighting tugs have been engaged by Wan Hai Lines to assist in controlling the blaze and stabilizing the ship. The Indian Coast Guard continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the critical nature of the fire and the risk posed by the hazardous cargo onboard.
