Nice France: United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 Focuses on Sustainable Ocean Development

From June 9 to 13, 2025, France and Costa Rica will co-host the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice. Following earlier editions in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022), this event gathers UN member states, agencies, civil society, private sector, and donors to strengthen global ocean conservation efforts linked to Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14).

France’s Leadership in Ocean Protection

The ocean covers over 70% of Earth’s surface and is vital for climate regulation, biodiversity, and global trade. However, it faces threats from climate change, pollution, and overfishing. France remains committed to protecting this essential resource on the world stage.

UNOC3 Focuses on Action and Funding

UNOC3 prioritizes:

  • Enhancing multilateral ocean governance for better protection.
  • Mobilizing finance for sustainable ocean use and blue economy growth.
  • Expanding ocean science knowledge for informed policy decisions.

The conference will end with the “Nice Ocean Action Plan,” including political declarations and voluntary commitments from stakeholders.

Plenary sessions each morning will feature state declarations on ocean commitments. Afternoons will hold “Ocean Action Panels” where governments, UN agencies, NGOs, scientists, and businesses collaborate on concrete ocean solutions.
