France: Saft to supply batteries for Naval Group submarines

French battery manufacturer Saft has secured a major contract from Naval Group to supply next-generation lithium-ion submarine batteries for the Barracuda and Scorpene families. Announced on 20 July 2026, the agreement brings together two French industrial groups in a field increasingly central to submarine endurance, reliability and operational flexibility. According to the official Saft contract announcement, the systems will use proprietary cells developed and manufactured internally by the TotalEnergies subsidiary. Neither company disclosed the contract value, the number of battery systems ordered, the delivery schedule or the individual submarines concerned. The precise onboard functions and configurations covered by the agreement also remain undisclosed.

Lithium-ion submarine batteries offer greater energy density

Saft said its lithium-ion technology provides higher energy density than traditional lead-acid batteries. The company expects this to support longer underwater endurance, stronger operational performance and greater freedom to adapt missions while at sea. The systems are also being designed to meet demanding naval requirements for safety and reliability. Energy storage is particularly important aboard conventionally powered submarines, which rely on batteries when operating submerged. Lithium-ion systems can store more energy in a smaller volume and maintain stronger performance across a wider state-of-charge range. Their use in submarines nevertheless requires rigorous thermal management, continuous monitoring and robust protection against cell failure. Saft chief executive Cédric Duclos described advanced batteries as an increasingly important factor in submarine performance and linked the contract to European technological sovereignty. Naval Group chairman and chief executive Pierre Éric Pommellet said integrating Saft technology would enhance performance at sea. The companies have worked together for several years, according to Naval Today’s report on the agreement.

Barracuda and Scorpene families serve different naval requirements

The Barracuda family includes France’s Suffren-class nuclear-powered attack submarines and the conventionally powered Blacksword Barracuda design offered to export customers. The French programme covers six nuclear-powered boats intended for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface operations, intelligence gathering, special-forces support and long-range strikes. The Scorpene is a conventionally powered attack-submarine family operated in several configurations by the navies of Brazil, Chile, India and Malaysia. Indonesia has also ordered two Scorpene Evolved submarines designed with full lithium-ion battery installations. Naval Group describes the Barracuda and Scorpene submarine families as multi-mission platforms designed for stealth, endurance and operations against surface and underwater threats.

Naval battery capacity becomes a strategic industrial asset

The agreement reflects the growing strategic importance of energy-storage technology within the European defence industry. Modern submarines carry increasingly power-intensive sensors, combat systems and communications equipment, making battery performance relevant beyond propulsion alone. By combining Naval Group’s submarine integration expertise with Saft’s cell development and manufacturing capacity, the contract reinforces a domestic supply chain for a critical naval technology. Its operational significance will become clearer once the companies identify the platforms, quantities and delivery milestones covered by the programme.
