Maritime Safety Review : what are the risks?
  • PublishedJune 7, 2023

Allianz Global Corporate and Specialty has published its 2023 Maritime Safety Report. In 2022, 38 ships were lost. These included vessels over 100 gross tons. This represents a decrease of 36% compared with 2021.

The areas most affected were South China, Indochina, Indonesia and the Philippines. This increase can be explained by multiple factors. High levels of trade, overcrowded ports, older fleets and extreme weather conditions.

The number one reason for maritime safety is shipwreck.
Secondly, fires. 8 ships were destroyed by fire. In addition, there were over 200 incidents. This could be explained by the new battery-powered ships. Also, the development of ghost fleets made up of older vessels carrying delicate cargoes such as oil has increased the risks.

Ship collision is the third reason for maritime insecurity.
