Ukrainian forces target Russian-occupied gas platform in Black Sea

The Ukrainian Navy has taken decisive action against a gas platform in the Black Sea, which had been captured and repurposed by Russian forces for military purposes. According to Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, this gas platform in the Black Sea was being used for GPS spoofing—a technique that misguides civilian ships by broadcasting false location signals.

The strike on the platform followed the deployment of Russian military personnel and equipment, just hours before the attack. Pletenchuk confirmed there were no civilians on the platform, which had ceased normal operations.

This operation is part of Ukraine’s ongoing strategy to protect maritime routes and disrupt Russian military initiatives in the region. Since 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea, several of Ukraine’s offshore platforms have been captured and repurposed for strategic gains by Russian forces. Recently, Ukraine has successfully pushed the Russian Navy out of key areas in the western Black Sea, establishing a vital corridor that has enabled the movement of millions of tonnes of goods.

Ukrainian military efforts have inflicted significant damage on the Russian Black Sea Fleet, with nearly one-third of its vessels reportedly destroyed since the conflict escalated.
