Senegal strides against maritime crime with the delivery of CAYOR patrol vessel in vast maritime expanse.
On April 16th, in Concarneau, the delivery ceremony of the Senegalese patrol vessel CAYOR unfolded. Crafted by the renowned Piriou company, it currently charts its course towards Dakar. This delivery marks a significant milestone within a contract inked back in November 2019, stipulating the construction of three OPV 58S type patrol vessels (measuring 62 meters by 9.5 meters). The inaugural duo, WALO and NIANI, was warmly received by Dakar’s naval base in August 2023 and January 2024, respectively.
These versatile vessels are poised to execute a broad array of missions crucial to maritime statecraft. They serve as linchpins in the Senegalese Navy’s efforts against illicit migration and drug trafficking. Notably, the WALO recently made headlines by intercepting 3 tons of cocaine aboard the fishing vessel NTEN FAYE, seized approximately 230 nautical miles south of Senegal’s territorial waters.
