Cracking Down on Maritime Narcotics: Spanish-Portuguese Joint Operation Dismantles Trafficking Network

On April 16th, Spanish and Portuguese authorities collaborated in a crackdown on a drug trafficking network that had been under surveillance since May 2023. The operation, which involved the Guardia Civil, Spanish police, Portuguese Policia Judiciaria, resulted in the apprehension of 19 individuals and the seizure of 1.4 million euros, 5 vessels, 19 luxury cars, and weaponry. The criminal syndicate primarily operated through maritime routes originating from Lisbon, where the trafficking was orchestrated, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Andalusia. A fleet of 8 to 10 “narcolanchas,” supported by logistical vessels, continuously ferried illicit goods across the waters.

This joint effort underscores the persistent commitment of Spanish and Portuguese authorities to combat maritime drug trafficking. Extensive surveillance over nearly a year culminated in the coordinated action that led to arrests and asset seizures.

Maritime routes remain attractive to drug traffickers due to their vast expanse and inherent challenges in monitoring. Utilizing high-speed vessels like “narcolanchas,” traffickers exploit international waters to transport substantial quantities of illegal substances undetected.

The collaboration between Spanish and Portuguese law enforcement agencies highlights the significance of cross-border cooperation in countering transnational organized crime. The successful outcome of the operation demonstrates the efficacy of unified approaches in addressing maritime security threats.
