Gibraltar: Russian submarine Novorossiisk in serious trouble after fuel leak

A Russian submarine, the Novorossiisk, is reportedly in grave difficulty after suffering a major technical failure while crossing the Strait of Gibraltar into the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel faces a serious risk of explosion after a fuel leak began accumulating inside its compartments.

A modern kilo-class submarine at risk

The Novorossiisk, commissioned in 2014 and part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, belongs to the Kilo-class of diesel-electric submarines, known to NATO as “Project 636.3.”

  • Length: 74 meters
  • Crew capacity: 52 sailors
  • Endurance: up to 45 days at sea

The submarine is designed to carry Kalibr cruise missiles with nuclear capability, although it was unlikely to be armed with them during this mission. The vessel had previously been detected near French coasts, including a 2022 incident in the Bay of Biscay when it was escorted by the French frigate Normandie.

The latest problems were reported on 26 September, shortly after Novorossiisk passed Gibraltar while moving from the Mediterranean into the Atlantic. The incident stems from serious damage to the fuel system, which caused fuel to leak into the hull, creating a volatile situation. Without spare parts or qualified technicians on board, the crew has been unable to contain the issue.

There are concerns that the crew may have no option but to discharge the fuel mixture directly into the sea to avoid a catastrophic explosion.

Echoes of the Kursk disaster

This alarming situation has drawn comparisons with the Kursk tragedy of August 2000. That nuclear-powered submarine exploded and sank in the Barents Sea, killing all 118 crew members. Investigations revealed that a torpedo malfunction caused by hydrogen peroxide leakage triggered the blast.

At the time, Russia’s refusal of Western rescue offers shocked international opinion, with reports suggesting officials preferred to avoid admitting vulnerability. The Kursk disaster remains one of the darkest chapters in modern Russian naval history, and the Novorossiisk’s plight revives fears of a similar scenario at sea.

The Novorossiisk incident near Gibraltar highlights the vulnerabilities of Russian naval operations far from home bases. With limited technical support available in the Atlantic, the fate of the submarine and its crew remains uncertain. The situation is being closely monitored by European and NATO naval forces, given both the environmental risks and the shadow of past Russian submarine catastrophes.
