United States: QinetiQ Wins $26M Deal for Virginia and Columbia Class Submarine Programs

The Columbia-class submarine is a new class

QinetiQ US has secured $26 million in subcontracts to deliver advanced electrical and electromechanical systems for the US Navy’s Virginia and Columbia class submarine programs. Awarded by General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), the contracts mark a significant step in strengthening the U.S. Navy’s undersea warfare capabilities.

Under the agreement, QinetiQ US will design, build, test, and deliver specialized mission-critical systems to support critical onboard operations. These components are intended to enhance submarine performance, ensuring optimal operational effectiveness in both littoral and deep-sea missions.

Production will be carried out at QinetiQ’s U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, with phased deliveries scheduled throughout the contract period.

Mission-Critical Systems for the Next-Generation Fleet

“These awards highlight Electric Boat’s confidence in QinetiQ’s engineering expertise, manufacturing capability, and our role within the Navy submarine industrial base,” stated Tom Vecchiolla, President and CEO of QinetiQ US.

According to the company, these systems will play a key role in boosting the operational capabilities of the Virginia and Columbia class submarines vessels that form the core of the US Navy’s current and future undersea dominance.

The Virginia class consists of nuclear-powered fast-attack submarines designed for stealth, firepower, and maneuverability across diverse environments. Meanwhile, the Columbia class is set to replace the aging Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, ensuring the continuity of the United States’ sea-based nuclear deterrent.

Recent Developments in the Submarine Fleet

The announcement follows the recent launch of the USS Arkansas (SSN 800), the 27th Virginia-class submarine, by U.S. shipbuilder HII. The vessel features cutting-edge stealth technologies and advanced warfare capabilities, further solidifying the role of Virginia-class submarines in U.S. naval strategy.

With these new contracts, QinetiQ US reinforces its position as a critical supplier in the submarine defense sector, supporting the evolving needs of the U.S. Navy and its undersea warfare strategy.
