Norway: Man Wakes to Find Cargo Ship Crashed in His Garden

Norway : Cargo Ship Crashed into Garden

In an extraordinary early morning incident in central Norway, a 135-meter cargo ship ran aground in the Trondheimsfjord, smashing into a garden and narrowly avoiding a residential home. The Cyprus-registered container ship, NCL Salten, was traveling at around 16 knots (30 km/h) when it veered off course around 5 a.m. on Thursday, startling residents in Byneset, just outside Trondheim.

Homeowner wakes to surreal sight of ship in front yard

Johan Helberg, a longtime resident of the area, described the moment he woke up to the view of the ship’s massive bow outside his window. Alerted by a neighbor ringing his doorbell, Helberg looked outside and was stunned by what he saw.

“I had to bend my neck to see the top of it,” he said. “It was so unreal.”

According to Helberg, who has lived in the same house for 25 years, ships regularly navigate the fjord but normally turn left or right to follow the waterway. The NCL Salten, however, appeared to sail straight ahead into his front garden.

Investigation Launched, One Suspect Identified Onboard

The Norwegian police have launched an investigation into the grounding and have identified one crew member as a suspect, according to Per Christian Stokke, spokesperson for the Trøndelag police district. The man’s identity and role onboard have not yet been disclosed.

The vessel carried 16 crew members of mixed nationalities, including Norwegians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Russians. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or oil spills.

Authorities are currently exploring multiple theories, including technical malfunction and human error. The police have already conducted interviews with the crew.

Shipping Company Responds, Salvage Efforts Underway

The vessel’s operator, North Sea Container Line (NCL), stated that the identification of a suspect was standard police procedure and emphasized that there is “no reason to believe this was intentional.”

CEO Bente Hetland added:

“Incidents like this should not happen, and we have started an investigation into the causes. Today, we are relieved that there were no injuries.”

The ship remained grounded as of Thursday afternoon, with an initial attempt to refloat the vessel during high tide proving unsuccessful. Another salvage effort was scheduled for later in the evening.

A Close Call on the Norwegian Coast

The incident has shocked locals and captured international attention. While the reasons behind the accident are still unclear, the proximity of the ship to Helberg’s house has sparked concern about navigational safety in Norway’s fjords.

“It was very close to the house,” Helberg repeated. “Much too close.”

As authorities continue to assess the damage and investigate the cause, salvage crews remain focused on freeing the stranded ship and preventing further disruption in this otherwise tranquil corner of coastal Norway.
