The crew of the Galaxy Leader, a vessel seized by the Houthi rebels in November 2023, has been released following diplomatic efforts by Oman and the United Nations, marking a positive step amid ongoing tensions.
Houthi movement releases crew of Galaxy Leader
The crew of the Galaxy Leader, a Bahamas-flagged vehicle carrier, has been released by Yemen’s Houthi movement. The vessel was seized in November 2023, at the beginning of a series of maritime attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea, linked to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The 25 crew members, who are from the Philippines, Mexico, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine, had been detained for over a year after the Houthis boarded the vessel while it was en route from Turkey to India. The crew’s release follows months of diplomatic efforts, particularly by Oman and the United Nations. The Houthis confirmed that the release was part of their support for the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, which began in late November 2023.
The crew was handed over to Oman, with the transfer coordinated by the Omani government. The release has been welcomed by the international community, particularly by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which expressed relief at the end of the crew’s detention.
Context and Diplomacy Behind the Release
The diplomatic efforts leading to the release of the Galaxy Leader’s crew were driven by Oman’s mediation and the involvement of the UN’s Special Envoy for Yemen. This marked a key step in easing tensions in the region, particularly concerning the safety of merchant vessels in the Red Sea.
While the situation remains delicate, the release of the crew was seen as a positive sign of progress, with hopes for further de-escalation in maritime attacks by the Houthis.
