Operation Orion seizes record 225 Tons of cocaine in international maritime operation

Multinational operation achieves historic drug seizure

In a groundbreaking maritime security operation, authorities from 62 nations collaborated in Operation Orion, resulting in the seizure of 225 tonnes of cocaine and the discovery of a new drug trafficking route to Australia. The six-week operation, led by Colombia’s navy, achieved the largest cocaine interception in the country’s history, with total drug seizures reaching 1,400 tonnes, including 128 tonnes of marijuana.

Advanced maritime trafficking methods challenge law enforcement

The operation’s most significant finding was the interception of a narco submarine 2,000 kilometres southwest of Clipperton Island, revealing sophisticated trafficking methods targeting the Australian market. These semi-submersible vessels, measuring 10-25 metres, can traverse up to 16,000 kilometres without refueling, demonstrating the evolving capabilities of drug trafficking organizations.

The Colombian navy’s anti-narcotics unit, employing advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, intercepted six such vessels during the operation. Manuel Rodríguez, head of the unit, confirmed this as the third vessel discovered in this Pacific region, indicating an established pattern of trafficking operations.

Australia’s cocaine market proves particularly attractive to traffickers, with prices reaching $240,000 per kilogram – approximately six times higher than U.S. rates. This economic incentive, combined with Australia’s position as the world’s highest per capita cocaine consumer according to OECD data, has driven criminal organizations to develop these innovative trafficking methods.

The operation also exposed new alliances between cartels from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru with criminal groups from Europe and Oceania. According to Orlando Enrique Grisales, these organizations have evolved from traditional pyramid structures into interconnected criminal networks.
