Port of Algeciras: record 13-ton cocaine seizure in Spanish drug trafficking history

Largest interception in Spain and Europe

Spanish authorities have intercepted a container at the Port of Algeciras carrying 13,062 kilograms of cocaine, the largest drug seizure in the history of Spain’s narcotics trafficking and one of the biggest in Europe. The operation was carried out by the Tax Agency’s Customs Surveillance Service and the National Police.

Concealed in banana shipment from Ecuador

The container had departed from the port of Guayaquil, Ecuador and was destined for an Spanish importer in the Valencian Community. The cocaine was hidden inside banana boxes, with fruit screens used to conceal the drug packages.

Extensive investigation and raids

As a result of the discovery, five judicial searches were carried out in Alicante and Madrid, leading to the arrest of one person. The two owners of the importing company are currently being sought by police.

Cooperation with Ecuadorian authorities

This historic operation was made possible through close cooperation between Spanish authorities and the Ecuadorian National Police, as the Ecuadorian Anti-Drug Investigation Directorate helped profile the shipment and alert Spanish investigators.
