A Cypriot cargo ship transporting granular stones ran aground off the coast of Tuscany due to severe weather conditions. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent a potential ecological disaster.
Severe Weather Causes Grounding Near Marina di Massa
On Tuesday evening, the Guang Rong, a Cypriot cargo vessel over 100 meters in length, ran aground near the jetty of Marina di Massa on Tuscany’s western coast. According to Italian coastguards, the incident was caused by unfavorable weather conditions.
The ship, used for transporting granular stones, was anchored offshore when powerful waves displaced its anchor, causing it to drift dangerously toward the coastline.
Fortunately, all 12 crew members, primarily Ukrainian nationals, were successfully rescued without injuries.
Authorities Monitor for Potential Environmental Risks
Local authorities are now focused on assessing the environmental impact of the incident. The mayor of Massa, Francesco Persiani, described the situation as a “small ecological bomb” due to the vessel’s fuel reserves.
The Guang Rong reportedly carries 102 tons of diesel fuel, raising concerns about a potential oil spill. However, no fuel leakage has been detected so far. To mitigate risks, absorbent materials are being prepared and will be deployed around the vessel to contain any accidental spillage.
“The weather conditions have prevented a thorough inspection of the hull,” Mayor Persiani told reporters. “We aim to assess the vessel’s condition later today or tomorrow to determine if any fuel has leaked into the sea.”
While the immediate focus remains on preventing environmental damage, maritime authorities are working on plans to stabilize and refloat the grounded ship.
