Sea-Fisheries protection authority annual report 2023: Enhancing fisheries enforcement

The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) published its 2023 annual report on 18 October, showcasing the agency’s continued efforts to ensure fisheries compliance and food safety regulations. With 2,222 fishing vessel inspections in 2023, the report highlights key achievements in safeguarding Ireland’s marine resources.

Increasing Fisheries Controls and Compliance in 2023

In 2023, the number of fisheries controls increased by 17%, with 80% of inspections showing compliance. The SFPA reached 91% of its annual target for inspecting fishing vessels and approved establishments. Throughout the year, 39 patrols were conducted, and the SFPA took part in six joint sea operations coordinated by the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA).

The report underscores the SFPA’s commitment to food safety and compliance with the EU sea fisheries control plan, enforcing regulations on food hygiene, labeling, and traceability. The SFPA achieved a 91% inspection target in 2023, demonstrating its dedication to the seafood industry’s regulatory standards.

VALID System: A Critical Tool in Fisheries Regulation

The VALID system plays a crucial role in the SFPA’s control activities. Developed by Ireland’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, this automated tool cross-checks and verifies data in real time, helping to identify non-compliant vessels. If any serious breaches are detected, the SFPA initiates enforcement actions.

The VALID system collects and verifies vessel information, including electronic monitoring data, sales notes, and species logged in electronic logbooks. This system is mandatory for all fishing vessels in the Irish Sea and ensures effective fisheries enforcement and resource management.

Ireland’s Growing Seafood Export Market

In 2023, Ireland’s seafood exports reached €550 million, with the United Kingdom and Nigeria being major importers. Over the past two years, Ireland has expanded the range of certified species for export. This growth not only strengthens the country’s position in the global seafood market but also underscores the importance of food safety regulations throughout the entire supply chain, ensuring the highest standards for international trade.
