Significant Reduction in Container Losses at Sea in 2023: World Shipping Council Report

On June 11, the World Shipping Council released a report highlighting a notable decrease in the number of containers lost at sea in 2023. The report records a drop to 221 containers lost, compared to 661 in 2022, marking the lowest level since the survey began in 2008. In 2023, it is estimated that 250 billion containers were transported, with a market value of approximately $7 trillion.

The report emphasizes significant improvements in the security of container ships, attributed to enhanced cooperation among various stakeholders in the logistics chain. Approximately 33% of the lost containers have been recovered.

In May 2024, the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 108) adopted mandatory reporting requirements for all containers lost at sea. These new regulations will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

*Container loss remains a constant concern for the maritime industry. The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) is conducting a study on the primary causes of container falls at sea, particularly focusing on the effects of parametric rolling. The institute will offer recommendations on stowage and safety in a report to be published by the end of 2024.
