Houthi Missile Strike on MV Laax : Raising Critical Questions

On May 28, a Houthi attack on the MV Laax intensified tensions in the Red Sea corridor. Supported by Iran, the Houthis launched five anti-ship ballistic missiles from areas under their control in Yemen, targeting the MV Laax, a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier owned by Greece. Three of these missiles struck the ship, which was carrying grain destined for Iran.

Does this attack highlight the incompetence or the intentions of the Houthis?

  • The MV Laax had not made any stops in Israel over the past 12 months.
  • Its AIS (Automatic Identification System) was on at the time of the attack.
  • It was a vessel trading with Iran.

Despite significant damage, including impacts on the waterline and the deck, the MV Laax continued its voyage, with no injuries reported among the crews of American, coalition, or merchant ships.

Since November, the Houthis have carried out more than 50 attacks on ships. This incident illustrates their broader strategy to disrupt maritime traffic in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
