Maritime Drug Busts: Thailand’s Battle Against Narcotics Trafficking

Unveiling Maritime Narcotics: Thailand’s Recent Ketamine Bust Spotlights the Ongoing Battle Against Trafficking in the Seas.

On the 25th of April, agents from Thailand’s National Office of Narcotics Control uncovered 320 kg of ketamine hidden within the feet of large-scale robot figurines. The consignment, bound for Taiwan, was confiscated from a carrier on the outskirts of Bangkok as it was about to embark on its maritime journey. This seizure follows a similar incident on March 12th, 2024, when Australian authorities intercepted 108 kg of methamphetamine concealed within a food processing machine imported from Thailand. Through collaborative efforts with Thai authorities, the sender was identified, and their attempt to make a new shipment was thwarted.

Between 2022 and 2024, Thai law enforcement agencies tackling drug trafficking in port areas have seized 4 tons of methamphetamine, over 2 tons of ketamine, and 265 kilograms of heroin, primarily destined for Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. The typical method involves transporting narcotics from private port facilities, often situated along Thailand’s eastern coast. The drugs are then loaded onto small vessels such as fishing boats, tugboats, or speedboats before being transferred onto commercial vessels offshore, in international waters where transshipments are challenging to monitor.
