Contecon, which operates the Port of Guayaquil in Ecuador, has just invested $3.5 million to improve security, in particular by purchasing three scanners in the port area. These scanners will help in the fight against drug trafficking, which is particularly prevalent in this country.
The port of Guayaquil is the largest in the country. It handles 46% of the country’s exports, including 60% of its banana exports (5 million tons of this product are exported each year). In 2022, 77.4 tons of cocaine were seized in the country’s ports, which face a high level of violence and an ongoing gang war that caused 3,568 deaths in the first half of 2023.
