138 penguins dead due to illegal fishing

A viral image depicts the heartbreaking sight of 138 dead penguins discovered off the coast of Santa Cruz Province in Argentina. This devastating event unfolded last week in Puerto San Julián, a port city in Patagonia, underscoring the urgent need for action against illicit fishing practices.

The flightless birds met their untimely demise when they became entangled in an unauthorized fishing net deployed in a protected area near ‘Faro Negro,’ close to Isla Pingüino (“Penguin Island”). Fishing firms, reportedly using trammel dragnets that indiscriminately capture marine life, operated without the necessary authorization, causing the most extensive known slaughter of penguins in the region.

Local authorities expressed frustration over a lack of police investigation and environmental negligence, emphasizing the importance of allocating resources to safeguard protected areas. The Provincial Agrarian Council of Santa Cruz promptly filed a complaint with the provincial Fisheries Secretariat, seeking accountability for this tragic event.

Amanda Manero, the outgoing director general of the Wildlife section of the Agrarian Council, lamented, “The number of dead penguins is very large and happens at a crucial time because they are breeding.” As authorities grapple with the aftermath, this incident underscores the immediate need for stringent measures against illegal fishing to protect vulnerable marine species and preserve delicate ecosystems.
