Mexican Navy seizes drug-laden submersible

On June 29, the Mexican Navy announced that a semi-submersible had been seized in the Baja California area. The seizure was made far from the usual smuggling zones. The intervention teams, dispatched by helicopter, intercepted and inspected the semi-submersible.
They discovered that it contained 186 packets of cocaine weighing a total of 3.5 tonnes. All five crew members were arrested. According to the Mexican Navy, the semi-submersible vessel was designed for an unusually long range compared with most of these craft, whose main use is to transport cocaine from the Colombian coast to Central America.
