In a significant step for European naval innovation, unmanned maritime platforms Italy cooperation was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Naples on February 17, 2026. HAVELSAN, Piloda Defence and VN Maritime Technologies will jointly develop and commercialize unmanned surface vehicles and hybrid manned–unmanned systems tailored to Italy and the wider Mediterranean. The agreement confirms Piloda and VN Maritime as exclusive partners for all USV projects in Italy, reinforcing maritime defence cooperation between Italy and Türkiye.
Technology and industrial roles
HAVELSAN will deliver autonomous control systems, mission management software, AI-enabled perception tools and secure communications architecture forming the digital backbone of the platforms. VN Maritime will act as prime contractor for platform design and system integration, while Piloda Shipyard will oversee manufacturing, sea trials, certification and lifecycle support in Italy. This model ensures strong local industrial participation and positions Italy as a European hub for next-generation naval systems.
Operational scope and 2026 procurement target
The hybrid maritime platforms will operate in autonomous, remotely controlled and mixed crewed modes. Planned missions include maritime surveillance, ISR, counter-smuggling, port and infrastructure protection, coastal and border security, and search and rescue. Optimised for demanding Mediterranean conditions, the partners aim to secure a first procurement contract in the first half of 2026, launching a broader Italian unmanned capability roadmap and deepening defence ties between Italy and Türkiye.
