French Navy Seizes Over 6 Tonnes of Cocaine in Major Drug Bust
On March 15, 2025, the French Navy intercepted a fishing vessel off the coast of West Africa, seizing over six tonnes of cocaine valued at approximately €371 million. This operation highlights France’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in international waters.
Details of the Seizure
The operation, authorized by the flag state of the vessel, was conducted in cooperation with international partners, including the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the British National Crime Agency (NCA). The fishing vessel, registered in Guyana, was found to be carrying 6,386 kg of cocaine. The French Navy, supported by helicopters and a drone, boarded the vessel after it exhibited suspicious behavior.
The cocaine was transshipped into a French naval vessel and destroyed according to legal procedures. The vessel’s crew, consisting of Colombian, Dominican, and Guyanese nationals, was allowed to leave without arrests.
French Maritime Security in West Africa
This operation is part of France’s “Corymbe” mission, which ensures maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. France’s presence supports the broader international efforts in West and Central Africa to combat piracy and drug trafficking, contributing to regional maritime security frameworks.
Support from Guyana
The Guyanese government authorized the French Navy to board the vessel, reinforcing their commitment to international cooperation against transnational crime. This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of global collaboration in securing international waters and fighting maritime drug trafficking.
