India and Kenya Unveil "BAHARI" Vision for Maritime Security

India and Kenya have solidified their commitment to enhancing maritime security cooperation, ushering in a new era of strategic collaboration. Underscoring their shared commitment to address maritime challenges, including piracy, armed robbery, terrorism, illegal fishing, and human migration, both nations, as integral members of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), emphasize a holistic approach to maritime security.

Transitioning to key elements, the vision entails collaboration in shipbuilding, trade facilitation, logistics, and the promotion of a sustainable fishing industry. Emphasizing joint efforts in defense equipment development, such as maritime surveillance tools and patrol vessels, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) are integral aspects, with a focus on effective disaster response and capacity building.

In terms of connectivity, crucial for trade and tourism, both nations prioritize investments in ports and infrastructure. India commits to providing capacity-building assistance to Kenya in oceanography, ship design, fisheries, and research capacity, highlighting a strong emphasis on technology transfer.

Expanding the partnership’s scope, information sharing through networks like the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) is emphasized. Opportunities for collaboration include providing an International Liaison Officer and an Indian Naval Officer, further strengthening ties.

This cooperative approach between India and Kenya, spanning maritime security, economic development, and technology transfer, signifies a significant milestone. The “BAHARI” vision establishes a synergistic alliance with far-reaching implications for global trade and security.
