Global Maritime Security: MICA Center Highlights 2024 Threats

The Maritime Information Cooperation & Awareness Center (MICA Center) has released its annual report, detailing rising maritime security threats in 2024. The report compiles incidents worldwide, analyzing the impact of geopolitical tensions and growing maritime crime.

Escalating Security Challenges

Conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have increasingly affected maritime zones, threatening freedom of navigation. In the Red Sea, Houthi rebels targeted 124 vessels, forcing rerouted shipping via the Cape of Good Hope. In the Black Sea, port infrastructure suffered severe damage, while the rise of a shadow fleet raised security concerns.

Surge in piracy and maritime crime

Piracy incidents increased by 110%, especially off Somalia. Drug trafficking reached record levels, with over 2,700 tons of cocaine circulating globally. Brigandage persists in the Singapore Strait, Gulf of Guinea, and the Caribbean, while illegal fishing threatens food security in West Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Strengthening maritime security

The MICA Center continues to monitor, alert, and assist industry stakeholders, collaborating with French military authorities and international partners to enhance global maritime security.
