Oil spill detected in Red Sea following Houthi drone attack on CHIOS LION tanker.
On July 17th, the British NGO Conflict and Environment Observatory, using images from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite, reported a 220 km oil slick spotted in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. The slick is believed to be near the Liberian-flagged tanker CHIOS LION, which was struck by a Houthi surface drone on July 15th, 97 miles northwest of Al-Hodeidah, Yemen. On July 2nd, the tanker had loaded 90,000 tonnes, or about 600,000 barrels, of fuel oil in the Russian port of Novorossiysk.
