Indian Navy rescues 17 crew from Somali pirates aboard MV Ruen

Indian naval forces, alongside special commandos, have successfully seized control of a cargo vessel hijacked by Somali pirates, rescuing 17 crew members in the process. The MV Ruen, a Maltese-flagged bulk cargo vessel, had fallen into Somali pirate control since late last year.

All 35 pirates aboard the vessel surrendered without resistance as the Indian Navy intervened, dealing a significant blow to Somali piracy. The vessel underwent a thorough search for illegal arms, ammunition, and contraband.

This successful mission underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to combating Somali piracy, which has witnessed a resurgence in recent months. The MV Ruen’s capture may have thwarted further piracy activities, including the hijacking of other vessels in the region.

India’s proactive stance against piracy threats includes deploying a fleet of warships to safeguard critical shipping lanes in the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. This recent operation reaffirms India’s dedication to maritime security and the protection of seafarers in the region.

The Indian Navy’s swift response is part of a series of anti-piracy actions, with the successful rescue of the Liberian-flagged MV Lila Norfolk earlier this year. With the capture of the Somali pirates involved in the hijacking, the Indian Navy stands ready to deter future acts of piracy in these vital maritime routes.
