Recent events off Senegal’s coast highlight the relentless battle against maritime drug trafficking, revealing the underbelly of transnational crime.
Senegalese authorities have announced the arrest of a suspected drug trafficker. “Alex” was apprehended through the collaboration of Interpol and the Guinean-Bissau judicial police. Initial findings from the investigation suggest that the shipowner, heading a fishing company located in the port of Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), was the linchpin of an international drug trafficking operation.
He was responsible for the transfer of the cargo. This arrest marks a significant development in a case that began with the seizure of drugs and the apprehension of the crew members of the ship “N’ten Faye”.
The event dates back to December 14th last year, when the Senegalese navy seized 3 tons of cocaine aboard the fishing vessel “N’ten Faye”, intercepted approximately 230 nautical miles south of Senegal. This operation was supported by the French navy’s Falcon 50 based in Dakar.
Senegalese investigators had launched an inquiry into possible connections with drug cartels in Latin America, West Africa, and Europe. The arrest of this trafficker could shed light on international drug trafficking networks and aid in dismantling the cartels involved in this case.
