On March 9, the Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center of New Caledonia (OSRC NC) unveiled its activity report for the year 2023. The figures reveal a slight increase in operational activity, with the coordination of 315 operations compared to 307 in 2022. Among these, 185 were search and rescue (SAR) operations, while 99 were interventions to assist distressed vessels (MAS). In less than four years, the number of SAR operations coordinated by OSRC NC has increased by over 60%.
In addition to its rescue missions, OSRC NC also monitors shark risks, with 36 reports in 2023, as well as tsunami risks and maritime pollution. Operating under the operational authority of the High Commissioner of the Republic and the President of the New Caledonia government, the center coordinates maritime rescue operations in the French responsibility zone of the territory, which extends over approximately 2.5 million km².
