On December 13, on the occasion of his annual conference at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI), Admiral Tony Radakin, the UK’s Chief of Defence Staff, announced that the frigate HMS DIAMOND would join the group of military vessels already present in the southern Red Sea, in response to attacks on merchant vessels by Houthi rebels. The frigate HMS DIAMOND has just completed a period of training in the Eastern Mediterranean.
On December 14, Danish shipowner A.P Moller-Maersk reported that its Hong Kong-flagged container ship Maersk GIBRALTAR, en route from Salalah (Oman) to Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), had been targeted by a missile 25 Nq west of El Hodeĩda. The missile reportedly exploded without causing any damage 100 meters off its starboard bow.
This is the 11th attack by Houthi rebels recorded in the area in the last month.
