Coordinated naval response across Calabar–Oron waterway
The Nigerian Navy rescue mission has successfully freed 17 passengers kidnapped by sea pirates along the Calabar–Oron waterway in Cross River State. The victims were abducted on September 25, 2025, while travelling aboard a Sea Express ferry to Oron, and were rescued on October 6 after an extensive naval operation led by Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory. The mission involved coordinated efforts across multiple commands, including aerial surveillance by the Nigerian Navy Air Arm and intelligence support from the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and Department of State Services (DSS).

Joint efforts lead to safe release without ransom
Acting on credible intelligence, naval personnel from NNS Victory and Forward Operating Base Ibaka launched a series of strategic operations, including the blockade of creeks leading to the kidnappers’ camp. Sustained monitoring eventually forced the abductors into negotiations facilitated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, leading to the safe release of all victims without any ransom payment. The Eastern Naval Command supervised the entire operation under the direction of the Chief of Naval Staff.
Victims reunited and security reinforced
Following their rescue, the 17 passengers underwent medical evaluations at the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Calabar before being handed over to Sea Express Transit Limited and reunited with their families. Navy spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Sulaiman Bala reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to maritime security, stressing that operations will continue to eliminate criminal networks in Nigerian waterways. “The Navy will not relent in ensuring safe navigation and the protection of law-abiding citizens,” Bala stated.
