U.S. Coast Guard Expands Drug Interdictions

The U.S. Coast Guard’s Operation Pacific Viper has intensified Eastern Pacific drug interdictions, targeting cartels and criminal networks operating maritime smuggling routes toward the United States. Since the operation began, Coast Guard cutters and law enforcement teams have seized thousands of pounds of cocaine and detained multiple smugglers in high-profile interdictions across the region.

Major cocaine seizures under operation Pacific Viper

  • August 8, 2025: USCGC Hamilton interdicted a smuggling vessel south of Mexico, detaining three suspected traffickers and seizing more than 4,000 pounds of cocaine.
  • August 11, 2025: A Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) operating aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Sampson disabled a drug boat’s engine by helicopter fire. Two smugglers were detained and 1,300 pounds of cocaine recovered.
  • August 16, 2025: USCGC Stone interdicted a vessel south of the Galapagos Islands, capturing three smugglers and confiscating 3,500 pounds of cocaine. The vessel was later destroyed at sea.
  • August 17, 2025: In another interdiction, Stone detained three additional smugglers and seized over 4,000 pounds of cocaine before scuttling the vessel.
  • August 19, 2025: Stone interdicted yet another smuggling vessel, confiscating nearly 3,000 pounds of cocaine. On the same day, a boarding team from USCGC Venturous intercepted a jettisoned cargo of 750 pounds of cocaine.

Operation Pacific Viper’s strategic impact

According to Secretary Kristi Noem, “80% of illicit drug seizures occur at sea.Operation Pacific Viper has already demonstrated its effectiveness, with more than 13,000 pounds of cocaine seized and at least 11 suspected traffickers detained in just weeks of operations.

The U.S. Coast Guard is employing a mix of cutters, helicopters, and Navy partnerships to disable engines, interdict smugglers, and destroy vessels after seizing evidence. By striking drug routes in the Eastern Pacific, the operation aims to cut off cocaine flows before they reach American shores.

Operation Pacific Viper marks a significant escalation in the fight against maritime cartels. With seizures surpassing 13,000 pounds of cocaine and multiple vessels interdicted, the U.S. Coast Guard’s surge operations in the Eastern Pacific highlight both the persistence of smuggling networks and the strategic role of maritime interdictions in national security.
