Search Operation Underway After Vessel Capsizes Off Mindoro

A Chinese-operated sand carrier, Hong Hai 16, capsized early Tuesday off the coast of Rizal, Occidental Mindoro, in the South China Sea. The incident has left 2 crew members dead, 9 missing, and 14 rescued, including 6 Filipinos and 8 Chinese nationals.

The accident occurred around 05:20 a.m., while the vessel was operating in moderate sea conditions. The cause is still under investigation.

Philippine Coast Guard Leads Rescue Efforts

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) immediately deployed divers from its Special Operations Group to the scene. The vessel is floating keel up, partially submerged, and authorities believe some crewmembers may be trapped in the engine room.

PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan conducted an aerial and on-site inspection, urging responders to continue efforts to locate potential survivors. Environmental monitoring has also been initiated to prevent pollution.
