On October 15, 2024, the Ecuadorian Navy, in cooperation with the High Seas Security Block, carried out a Galápagos drug interception operation within the exclusive economic zone of the Galápagos Islands. During the mission, they intercepted a vessel carrying 48 bundles of drugs, amounting to approximately 1.5 tons. Three individuals aboard the boat were arrested and transferred for further investigation, as confirmed by the Armed Forces.
This marks the second Galápagos drug interception near San Cristóbal Island within a month, highlighting the persistent issue of drug trafficking in Ecuador’s waters. The military and police forces, who are part of the High Seas Security Block, played a critical role in identifying and seizing the vessel laden with narcotics.
Ecuador is currently ranked as the third country in the world in terms of drug seizures, with approximately 200 tons of narcotics confiscated each year, following Colombia and the United States.
The coordinated efforts of the Ecuadorian Navy and the High Seas Security Block have been crucial in combating drug trafficking in remote areas like the Galápagos. These operations not only aim to curtail the movement of drugs through Ecuadorian waters but also work to strengthen maritime security and protect the delicate ecosystem of the island region.
