The French Navy cocaine seizure off Martinique marks a significant victory in the fight against international drug trafficking. In a record-breaking operation, the Navy intercepted over 10 tons of cocaine on a fishing vessel approximately 1,220 km from the island’s coast during the night of August 14-15. This remarkable seizure, totaling 10,552 kg, stands as the second-largest cocaine haul ever recorded by the French Navy.
The ship and its illicit cargo were escorted to Fort-de-France, Martinique, by the frigate Ventôse. The nine individuals arrested—six Brazilians, two Colombians, and one Venezuelan—are now facing serious charges, including organized drug trafficking and aggravated possession of category B weapons. The operation was a result of coordinated efforts between various international agencies, with crucial intelligence provided by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
This operation underscores the ongoing importance of international collaboration in disrupting the global narcotics trade, particularly in key regions like the Caribbean, where maritime routes remain a primary channel for smuggling cocaine into Europe.
