Empowering Fisheries Management: ISMI’s Training Initiative in the Gulf of Guinea

Empowering fisheries management ISMI‘s training initiative in the Gulf of Guinea

From March 25 to 29, 2024, the French Cooperation project of the Interregional Maritime Security Institute (ISMI) organized a specialized training on “Fisheries Management” in Abidjan, with the support of the Fisheries Division of the Institut Agro de Rennes-Angers. The aim was clear: to provide fisheries regulators in the Gulf of Guinea countries with the necessary scientific tools for formulating sustainable and manageable fisheries regulations.

Lieutenant Colonel Abé Aké Lazare, Director of ISMI, expressed gratitude to France for its financial and educational support, enabling ISMI to host an annual capacity-building seminar for fisheries stakeholders.

Since 2018, ISMI has been at the forefront of training programs for fisheries inspectors. The recent module, the final stage of a comprehensive curriculum, began with resource assessment and concluded with the development of regulatory measures and control plans, allowing trainees to tailor regulations to the specific needs of their countries.
The participation of twenty trainees from ten countries underscored the importance of this initiative.
