Deep Sea Vision, a specialist in deep-sea exploration and work such as underwater cable investigation and repair, seabed mapping and scientific research, announced on January 24 that it had potentially located the wreckage of the Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft piloted by Amelia Earhart.
The discovery is believed to have been made in the vicinity of Howland Atoll, halfway between Hawaii and Papua New Guinea, at a depth of around 5,000 metres. A sonar-equipped drone revealed images showing a metallic silhouette similar to that of the missing aircraft.
The aircraft had disappeared on July 2, 1937, as Amelia Earhart attempted the first round-the-world flight by a woman, prompting speculation about its disappearance.
