Houthi claim attack on French container ship in Red Sea

In a concerning development, Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for targeting a container ship owned by the French shipping company CMA CGM in the Red Sea. The rebels, aligned with Iran, accuse the vessel named Tage of heading for Israel. The French shipping group assured that the Tage “suffered no incident” during the reported attack.

This comes amid weeks of heightened tensions, with Houthi rebels disrupting global trade by attacking ships in the Red Sea. They claim these actions are in response to Israel’s alleged aggression against Gaza. This attack follows another that took place last weekend, a Danish Maersk container ship fell victim to a missile attack, prompting the U.S. Navy to retaliate, sinking three Houthi ships.

The Houthi rebels, in solidarity with Gaza, have intensified drone and missile attacks off the Yemeni coast. They specifically warned of targeting ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. In another incident, a Maersk vessel, the Hangzhou, issued a distress call after being attacked by Houthi-controlled boats, narrowly avoiding a potential boarding.

As tensions escalate, the international community closely monitors the situation in the strategically vital Red Sea region. The U.S. Navy’s active involvement signals growing concerns about the safety of maritime trade routes in the area.
