In a significant development, Nigerian customs officials intercepted a sophisticated cache of illicit weapons concealed in a shipping container from Turkey. This seizure, one of the largest in Port Harcourt’s history, underscores the nation’s struggle with the illegal arms trade and rising crime.
Authorities, acting on intelligence from transnational crime organizations, tracked the container’s journey across continents to Onne port, a major hub for Nigeria’s maritime exports. Despite the importer’s attempt to smuggle the container through a private bonded terminal, customs officials successfully intercepted it on June 21.
They discovered 844 weapons, including rifles and carbines, and 112,500 rounds of ammunition hidden among legitimate goods. The Nigerian Customs Service displayed the haul on July 1, initiating a thorough investigation and placing three suspects in custody under the direction of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Customs.
The seizure at Port Harcourt Area II Command, Onne, is part of a growing series of confiscations as Nigeria grapples with escalating arms smuggling. Earlier incidents this year included a March seizure in Lagos and a January interception by the Nigerian National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, highlighting the pervasive nature of the issue.
